Beloved Castaway by Kathleen Y'Barbo
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Kathleen Y'Barbo is a tenth-generation Texan and a mother of three grown sons and a teenage daughter. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University and an award-winning novelist of Christian fiction whose first published work jumped onto the Christian Booksellers Association bestseller list in its first month of release. Kathleen is a former treasurer for the American Christian Fiction Writers, and is a member of the Author’s Guild, Inspirational Writers Alive, Words for the Journey Christian Writers Guild, and the Fellowship of Christian Authors. In addition, she is a sought-after speaker, and her kids think she’s a pretty cool mom, too…most of the time, anyway.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Isabelle Gayarre, fleeing a life of servitude, refuses to be owned by anyone, yet soon finds her heart in danger of being possessed by the godless Captain Josiah Carter. Can Isabelle trust him to help her escape without losing her heart? Josiah Carter, running from demons of his own, is stirred by the presence of the beautiful woman seeking refuge on his ship. Realizing that a runaway slave can never be his, legally or otherwise, a storm begins to brew within. Will their love ever reach a safe haven, or is it doomed to wreck upon the jagged reefs of the Fairweather Keys?
REVIEW:
The story starts slow as most historical stories usually do; you have no idea where it is going, what the author is trying to tell you, or what the plot is really about at all. But this is not one of those books where you need to get to the middle to appreciate the story. If you prod on just a few more pages, you'll realize that the backdrop of incredible historical details were written so, to set the mood and the pace of how things are going to happen.
While the story starts slow, it builds towards an exciting end with very creative twists and surprises. When you thought you had all things figured out and the plot starts to look predictable, more twists and turns force you to other conclusions.
The plot was a nice trip back into time and the characters were very richly drawn. I was surprised to find characters praying out loud and quoting Scriptures from time to time with the occasional knack of comic relief permeating the pages. It made the story look genuinely honest and even more interesting.
"Beloved Castaway" is a heartwarming story of faith, love and struggle for freedom in the midst of the swirling storms of life and finding all these in the gentle hands of God; and I really enjoyed it! I look forward to reading more from Kathleen Y'Barbo.
